A campaign to make Blackpool’s streets safer now includes the town’s bus and tram network after Blackpool Transport became the latest operator to support the Green Dot initiative.

Green Dot was launched in Blackpool in March 2023 and teaches bystanders how to intervene safely to diffuse potentially aggressive situations.

Blackpool Transport has now joined forces to help spread the message across its fleet of vehicles and to users of public transport.

It has provided Green Dot training to all staff to help explain the programme and equip them with the knowledge on how best to deal with any reported incidents by passengers.

Bystander Intervention teaches five basic steps:

  • Notice the event
  • Interpret the situation as a problem
  • Assume personal responsibility
  • Know how to help
  • Step up

The programme, created by Alteristic, a US non-profit consultancy, explores the barriers that individuals feel may prevent them from intervening.

Coun Jo Farrell, cabinet member for communities and well-being said:  “Blackpool Transport joining the Green Dot campaign is fantastic, and a real key move in raising awareness across the town, our people and beyond. We’re thrilled to have their support.

“Green Dot will have a lifelong impact to sustain behaviour change, helping to reduce rates of violence. With more green dots than red dots, Blackpool will be a safer and more inclusive environment for all.”

Blackpool Council’s Public Health team offer regular Green Dot training opportunities to local businesses, organisations, community groups and individuals.
